This hobby is great, just do not lose hope!

Hi all,

I've been reading all the messages on species main., state of
the hobby today and 'new comers-old timers'.

Not that you are interested, I'll tell you how I got into
killies anyway!...

5 years ago now, a local generalist aquarium society member
brought a pair of 'killies' to the societies auction. "Killies?
Wow! I've never seen one in flesh before" was my reaction.
Needless to say I was the highest bidder for that pair. I got
my pair of Fp.gardneri and appoached the seller, asked him all
manner of questions in maintaining and breeding the fish. In
return he took his time telling me about 'Killifish'. Next weekend
I was at his house picking up a pair of A.striatum.

Five years on I am still maintaining striatums (though couple of
times it was touch and go!), recently been approached by the
very person who introduced me to killies, and will be giving him
back some striatums!

To me I am doing my bit for species main. in my local area with
striatums, as well as A.(Fp.?)scheeli, E.sexfasciatus (I was once
told I owned the only two pairs in existance in Australia). My
fish tanks are multiplying quicker than my fish to keep up with
my desire to keep additional species.

I am 26 years old and I am the current NAKA (National Australian
Killifish Association) President (and you guys are giving me whole
lot of stuff to write in my newsletters). I have enthusiasm and I
love this hobby, but I get disheartened quickly and absolutely
hate politics. I need guidance and support, which I recieve from
certain NAKA members.

Encourage the young folk, they are (I am included) just thinking
about the issues some of you have been involved or thinking about
for ages. Share with them your experiences and be not afraid to
admit you were thinking along the same lines once yourself. You
see a wrong in their arguement, let them know. But when the
arguments have merit, encourage them. Heck, use them, use their
enthusiasm. If they are talking nonsense, tell them what to do,
and how to do it. Please do not loose your patience!

Yours sincerely,
Serkan Alasya
NAKA President
