I need to straighten a couple of things out.
This e-mail is to address some things in Tom's e-mail:
>>Tom: "I don't want just everyone to know what is in my fishroom and
it has nothing to do with secrecy and everything to do with not wanting
phone calls for rare species I barely keep going myself."
Once again I will state that it could be confidential! No, information
would be given out without the permission of the person. It the list could
just look like: SPECIES: 4 PAIR and so on.
>>Tom: "An open species maintenance list simply puts everyone at the risk
for phone
calls they do not wish to deal with."
It was never really my intention for an open species maintenance list in
which all of the persons personal information is showed to the world.
>>Tom: "Not in the least, I was simply explaining that people move in and
out of the
hobby regularly. As for getting information for those people, they
constantly are doing open positive things for the betterment of the hobby,
but they can't all focus on a single aspect, they write articles, they
operate KKC groups, they publish the books people want, they work in the 25+
committees of the AKA, membership, beginners, website, affiliate club
program, set up conventions and run them. Just how much time do you expect
people to dedicate to a hobby?"
What I meant by "getting information from the core members" is
information about what fish they are keeping. I know they are doing positive
things for the AKA and they are very busy. It wouldn't take that much time
1-2 times a year to take an inventory of fish and send it in, pet shops do
it every week.
>>Tom: "Give me a break Ryan, I have been working, with assistance from
numerous
people, during that time. 2-3 years ago website management for the AKA was
just beginning. You said you were in college partying - I was working
10-12 hours days 6 days week, spending my free time in my fishroom for the
hobby, developing the SMC database and trying to get enough free time to
take my wife on a vacation."
The question was asked something along the lines of "what were you doing
2-3 years ago" and I responded with the truth. And then I followed it up by
telling about where I am now (like everyone else) in my career job and
spending my free time with my hobby. And I was trying to show that at this
point in my life I am ready to work on such matters. I don't have to wait
until I am over 30 years old to do such things. Maybe I should just come
back in 7 years and everyone would take me a bit more seriously. But I don't
think I should have to wait that long.
>>Tom: " - but please - don't make it sound like nothing was being done."
I know things were being done, but it was also said that the effort was
made to contact all members and get them to send in their information about
what species they are keeping. I meant that if that was still in place it
would have been further than it is now. Sorry.
>>Tom: " never received a species list from you"
Have you ever asked for one?
>>Tom: "I want to say right now - I resent the implication the Core Members
are denying anything."
I e-mailed Barry a while back and he pointed me to another person. I
gave my information to them of what I could possibly do and
then.........nothing. If you recall, even in my first message I sent about
this whole Species Maintenance thing I offered to help in any way! So please
don't tell me I didn't offer to help.
>>Tom: "Has Lee Harper received your application for any of the currently
available jobs?"
As a matter of fact I discussed briefly with another killietalk member
(off list) about helping with the F&EL. He then reminded me that since I am
a "newcomer" that it would involve correcting a lot of scientific names that
I am still not too familiar with. I agreed wholeheartedly with his remark,
therefore I didn't send an e-mail offering my help.
>>Tom: "Ryan, I am not trying to flame you - just trying to make the point
about
how easy it is to ask the questions, challenge those who are making an
effort and expect "professional services" from a volunteer organization."
I am not expecting "professional services" I am trying to help out and
get something going.
>>Tom: "Once again, idealism comes into play - I suspect if a fish is rare -
it
is because no one has 70 pairs of a species."
I gave that number as an EXAMPLE.
>>Tom: "Someone who has 50 fish today, could have
a die-off tomorrow and have 5 left. I know I would not immediately jump on
the website to tell everyone I just lost most of my fish, "
That is why this could be done 1-2 times a year. I see this is obviously
going no where because if anyone thought that my ideas were any good they
would be building on the idea instead of picking it apart and not thinking
about what could be done.
>>Tom: "I will not betray any trusts because some people feel a right or
desire to know everything."
As I recall no one has stated that they "feel a right or desire to know
everything". I stated several times that the person could give their
information if they want to or remain confidential. I am not trying to
invade anyone's privacy. I just think that for the benefit of the hobby, it
would be good to know what is out there.
It seems that most of the "core members" are not open to new ideas. I
don't believe that you guys even gave the idea a chance. As if you just saw
it pop up again and then it was just shot down, -been there done
that-doesn't work. That is the feeling I get.
I can't say I didn't try!
Please, no hard feelings. I don't want everyone to be mad at me for
discussing this matter in such a way.

Ryan Deal
