Re: names

Hi all,
I guess the main problem is that no one seems to have told the
scientists that their research should be subordinate to the will of the
hobbyist. I honestly don't think they are aware of this. Scientific
technique is has a nasty habit of improving and some of the square pegs
just don't fit in their holes anymore. I do think it somewhat scandalous
to intimate that taxonomists are all working to some unscrupulous self
aggrandizement agenda, and the rest of the scientific community is
complicit in this. I shall resist using a rude word!
Personally I find the scientific classification to be very useful. If
there's a fish I don't recognise at an auction for example XYZ on the
bag would tell me nothing about it, likewise Blue Bearded Muffin Eating
Killie tells me nothing! Nothobranchius tells me something. Further, the
splitting of large genera may help even more. Personally I have had
reasonable success breeding Fundulopanchax, some success with
Aphyosemions and absolutely none with Scriptaphyosemion. These are not
hard and fast rules but are useful to me.
Also regarding TLA's I'm quite happy to use the common ones as an
informal shorthand. TLA's WILL NOT simplify things for killie keepers.
Yes, ascribing a 3 letter code is simple, but that is not the same
thing. Anyone know how many species are listed in killidata, I'm
certainly not going to try and remember codes for all of them. How would
you index such a code list and still have it comprehensible? There's no
system to it, just arbitrary assignment.
Regarding common names I dug out Exotic Tropical Fishes to check on
some of Axelrods et al Common Names. Now these are brilliant blokes but
dear me....

			Aphyosemion geryi = Gery's Aphyosemion
			A. guineense = Guinean Killie - lets hope no one finds another.
	                C whitei = White's Pearl Fish
			C. wolterstorffi = Wolterstorff's Pearl fish

Maybe I'm wrong and the common names are much easier? Common names are
only common when they are commonly used, it's not the sort of thing you
can impose, it just sort of evolves.

Hope I haven't offended anyone, just my opinion
