Scientific Names of Killies
Not only is it necessary one use the proper scientific name for a specific
killifish, but an accurate collection site is often vital. I fear there have
been some erroneous collection sites floating about, so be careful. Then too,
I have encountere a collection site designated "CI" and was chagrined to find
that simply means Commercial Import. "That ain't no collection site!" It may
be helpful in giving a date for the collection, but don't use it for a
collection site. Those fish are simply "aquarium strain" until a definite
collection site is identified.
Common names are OK among a close community of friends, but are a real
problem talking with someone in Germany or even the other side of the USA.
The beginners simply must learn the proper nomenclature. The AKA has done a
wonderful job of furnishing us with the printed material, thank goodness. I
presume the name changes have complicated the editing of the new Atlas of
Wildekamp, Vol !V. Hurry with KMI IV, please.
