Re: HTML? Moylan's Last Word (Sorry, Barry)
Hello All,
I knew the nomex and flame gel were a good idea! I got precisely
the raging, hysterical response I anticipated. I know when to give up,
plain text is here to stay- for a LONG time! I have only these words to
add. I chair the Technology Committee at my school and am therefore one of
the two people on campus responsible for virus recovery when necessary. I
know what it is like to fix 100 infected computers- several times. I have
had to deal with several viruses at home. I have never, to my knowledge,
had to repair a machine infected by HTML email. I still do not believe the
threat is as great as many of you do. I think much of the histeria is due
to false/exaggerated propaganda from Outlook competitors and anti-Microsoft
fanatics (and there are LOTS of those!). As a historian, I am trained (much
like a scientist or detective) to examine EVIDENCE, not to accept reports at
mere face value. I still don't know how truly vulnerable HTML code is. I
have seen NO solid evidence- only hearsay. Even from "experts." Only
anecdotal or secondhand information seems readily available. For all I
know, the fear may be justified. But I don't have sufficient evidence to
take me to that conclusion. One of my best friends is a top programming
egghead at IBM. He uses HTML in Outlook Express and Hotmail without
reservation. And I *KNOW* his credentials and expertise. I do not intend
this as an insult to any of you. I have seen here on Killietalk that you
are some very thoughtful, knowledgeable, and worthy people! I would just
like some *objective* evidence I can use to reach a sensible conclusion.
That is my last word for at least 6 months on the subject- even if
you bring out the Greek naptha, napalm, and C-4.
Jay Moylan
