Hi Folks-
Here are my two cents on this.
I'm a computer professional at an Ivy league university. I hate viruses and
virus hoaxes, so if my email is testy, it's not at anyone in particular. I'm
sick of wasting my limited time with these sophmoric idiots who program this
crap.
Where I work we do not support Outlook (any version) because of virus
threats. If someone wants a IMAP mailer we suggest they use Netscape
Communicator or Eudora.

It's pretty bad unless you take measures to set it properly (see below).
>What is the evidence?
Come on over to my work site and I'll let you clean off a computer with MTX
because someone MUST use Outlook.

Ick. I don't. Web pages are bad enough with people's warped color sense.

What, oh please! This isn't the X-files! These viruses DO exist, they are
mostly tuned to take advanatge of Outlook! It's a fact! If you spent a week
of your life in the registry editior and cleaning PC's of these viruses,
you'd be a bit more careful too.
I use "modern" software, but what about us digest users? I'm sick of having
to scroll through pounds of symbols to get to the next message. Just so
someone can use pink and orange text I have to annoy my Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome?

I support 200+ computers. Gets to be a bit more than a "pain in the ass". I
also don't need your infected machine sending viruses all over the world, so
some other poor IT professional has to clean them off.
Everyone, you will not get a virus if you use common sense:
1) Never open attachments if you are not expecting them. I don't care if
they are from your Momma. Even if the subject says "great dirty jokes You
must read!!!". I only open attachments when I am expecting them and when I
confirm with the person they sent me an attachment. I use a lot of
attachments. I've never had a virus from one yet.
2) If you must use Outlook, turn off the feature that automatically opens
your attachments when you open your email.
3) Uninstall the Windows Scripting Host from Windows. I bet you are not
using it anyway.
4) Did you install Norton Antivirus in 1998 and have not updated it since?
Update your virus scanner's "virus" file every month at least. Otherwise
it's useless. Make sure your scanner it set to scan ALL files, nor just
.docs and .exe, etc.
5) Scan any media that comes into your computer. I mean it. If you forget or
are lazy about it, set up your virus scanner to do it automatically.
6) DO NOT forward any "Virus Warnings" you get chain letter fashion. 99.9
percent of the time it is a hoax. If the message says "forward this to
everyone!!" and "we got this info from Bill Gates/CNN/Norton/Joe the IT guy"
it's fake, trust me. Any virus hoaxes can be checked out at www.vmyths.com.
Virus hoaxes suck because: 1) They take advantage of well meaning people,
which makes me mad 2)They waste bandwidth, like any chain letter 3)they
freak people out for no reason and 4) They then call/email me to ask me
about this fake virus. We can fight these jerks who start these things by
not sending this crap around.
