A. lujae was an old, old description that was never found or brought back
since the original description. No photographs exist of the fish. Early
drawings don't tell much. The preserved specimen shows little of the actual
color or markings of the fish. It was said to have come from the south or
southeast of the current Democratic Republic of the Congo. The only species
ever brought back from anywhere within hundreds of miles of the area of the
original description was "cognatum" Lake Fwa.
In the 1960's and the 1970's the name lujae was mistakenly given to ogoense
ottogartneri, which has had a bad history of having been given erroneous
names. Ottogartneri was then later called striatum. The old pictures of
lujae were all of populations of the ogoense ottogartneri.
Recently there was some speculation that the elegans group species "Oyo" may
have some connection with lujae, but they come from areas vast distances
apart. It is possible that the early collections of lujae may have come from
some other area, but in the process were mistakenly assigned to the Kasai
area of Congo.
Someday this may be cleared up, but umtil extensive future collections are
made in southern and southeastern Congo (Democratic Republic of), we can
rest assured that there are no, nor have there been any lujae brought back
out of the Congo or pictures thereof.
