Some thoughts and questions
hi,
A couple of thoughts: watch out if you decide to buy the new Eheim
"ecco" filter. I do not think they are worth the money. On a 29 gallon, bare
bottom tank, with 8 subadult montezumae swords, the thing clugged up after a
week or two -- for months. I tried everything I could to stop it, but
nothing worked. It cannot work an Eheim spray bar and it provides almost zero
circulation. An old 2213 will run for months untouched and keeps the water
flowing. The "ecco" is the first cheesey product Eheim has ever made -- in my
experience. The autostart handle breaks down easily too.
Just started hatching some chinese brine shrimp cysts and I am very
pleased. Using half gallon glass milk jugs and two tbsp of salt with a large
pinch of epson salt I seem to get as good a hatch as with Utah eggs. The
little guys are funny though. They don't like to collect in one place like
the Utah. They collect in little groups all over the jar. Makes siphoning fun.
How do you grow java moss and java fern? I have tried for 25 years and
always fail. At best it exists. I have used high light and low light; small
tanks and big; soft and hard water; acid and alkaline; fertilizer and no
fert.; wood and gravel to grow it -- everything. I see some guys with buckets
of it. What is the secret? Is there something these just hate?
How do you get rid of hydra? I have tried salt, copper, formalin and
Bausman's fish tonic and nothing works. All I ever do is kill my floating
najas -- formalin wiped it out over night. I never had hydra years ago and
now any tank that gets bbs becomes filled with it. What is up? Is there a
sure fire cure in a tank with fish? Is the only way to end it to get rid of
all live plants?
