And it's an old net convention to indicate italics by enclosing them between
a couple of asterisks, like *this*. Underlines are like _this_. It's a poor
substitute for full MIME with fancy fonts, but it is way easier than the
ones some editors <start ital>want<end ital>. ;-) Even HTML, with <i>its</i>
symbols is easier than *that*.
These shortcuts are going to fade away, when mail lists and everybody's
editors can handle HTML or various MIME variations. Folks on AOL still have
to go get a separate e-mail account, for AOL no longer even lets members
*have* simple plain text (ASCII) in V. 6., and most lists forbid anything
else.
