It's never fun to put any animal down, be it fish, frogs, cats, dogs, or
what have you. Don't let it put you off keeping fish--just use as an
incentive to learn how to be a better hobbyist.

There are a couple of less traumatic (both for the fish and the owner)
ways to kill a fish. The first is to place the fish in a small container
of water and place the container into the freezer. As the water
temperature drops, the fish "goes to sleep" and doesn't feel a thing.
Another method is to feed the fish to something big and hungry. Not as
peaceful an end as the ice water, and I would not recommend feeding a
sick fish to the "big hungry" since this might spread disease.

Hope this helps a bit.
