RE: Silicon sealant and aquaria
OK Folks:
This is my last message regarding silicone sealant. I am sure that by now
most of you are trying to change the channel on your monitors.
Dale, just so you know, You made me traipse all of the way down to my cold
dank basement to get a cartridge of GE silicone sealant. It is GE Window &
Door (Clear). Stock number GE012A, Batch HD022, Use by 04/00. It was
obtained at Home Depot last year.
It is labeled "100% Silicone Rubber Sealant". There is no mention of
aquarium use on the container. I called the GE answer line earlier today at
800-626-2000. This is the product that GE claims should only be used for 5
gallon tanks or less. GE claims that GE012A Replaces GE012, which is no
longer stocked. They claim it is the same product. GE advised me that
colored versions GE 112, 312 and 361 can be used interchangeably with
GE012A. They may be more UV Resistant than 012A.
I asked which chemical was used to retard the mildew in the 612 and 5040
lines and the rep was unable to provide me with that information. They are
faxing me the detailed spec sheet on all of these products. When I get the
fax I might be able to figure it out.
GE further advised me that currently none of their products are approved by
the FDA for food contact surfaces!
They are currently recommending at least five day of hardening time before
water contact.
When I said that none of these products are 100% Silicone (as in the element
on the periodic table), I was referring to the following markings on the
product.
Ingredients:
Polydimethylsiloxane 70131-61-8;Treated Fumed Silica
68511-44-9;Dimethylpolysiloxane 63148-62-9;
Methyltriacetoxysilane:4253-34-3; VOC (excluding water and exempt compounds)
is less than 50 g/l
I am sure that the package labeling was changed from the one you have
because it may have been misleading.
As your tube apparently predates mine you might want to test it before using
it!
Finally, the reason I have GE012A in stock is because I use it for smaller
all glass fish tanks as well as larger metal frame tanks. It is 1/4 the
price of the aquarium specialty products. I too have never knowingly lost a
fish because of it. It might also work on huge all glass tanks built from
scratch, but as I have never tried it for that purpose I will not recommend
it here.
As to whether the GE product is the same as the Perfecto variety, I can only
say that it is in a different package and in my test it did not achieve the
same level of hardness. Finally there can conceivably be an infinite
numbers of chemical formulas which can be used to make "100% silicone
sealant". I agree that it works as stated above. You may be right that it
is the same product as the pet shop variety, but before I agree with this
contention I would need to see the chemical formulas of both.
Dale, I think, we may be agreeing on the results just getting there
differently. Remember there are a lot of new people out there without our
level of experience. You and I both know a whole lot more about building or
repairing fish tanks than we have written here! It may be someone else's
natural tendency to extrapolate on what we say here. They may wind up with
a moisture problem or dead fish. That's the only reason my recommendations
are more conservative than yours.
Best Regards,
-RJ-

I have made all of my breeding tanks as well as repaired and rebuilt
most of my tanks. I have used GE 012 with no loss of any fish. I have
used tanks that have cured for only 48 hours as well.
The tube that I have says plainly on the tube 100% SILICONE. Not
100% silicone sealer. It says on the tube may be used on food contact
surfaces. It also states on the tube for use with aquariums after
48 hours of curing. It is dated and using after the date voids the
warrenty.
It probably is the same product used in the Pet Store tubes with a
different lable and at 1/4 the price.
