N. rubripinnis, KTZ 85/28
Hi - This is not a common strain, but it isn't depleted from the hobby. I've
been raising it for a good number of years and it has done very well for me.
(Some day I will have to go back in my records and find out where and when I
got the fish, but that isn't going to happen very soon) I've distributed a
number of pairs to various people and have put several in the AKA convention
shows as well as in the fish sales. Why it has not been a more popular
variety, I have no idea. It is a little small when compared to some of the
other Nothos, but the colors are fantastic. It does require a little more
attention than some of the easier varieties, but it is not impossible to
take care of. Just recently I had a very large hatch, but I don't have any
eggs or adults to spare. Please keep in mind that I've had the strain for a
good number of years and I would suspect that some genetic drift has
occurred. But, it does look very similar to the picture in the "Atlas", pg
407. I also maintain N. rubripinnis, Lisinjiri River TAN 97/27 (which
actually looks more like the picture on pg. 407 than the 85/28 does) as well
as N. rubripinnis, Mbezi River TAN 95/6. As far as I'm concerned they appear
to be quite different strains.
At the moment, and for some time to come, central NY is very cold,
temperatures in the single digits for most of the last week, so I'm not
going to attempt to ship any fish for a while. However, when it eventually
warms up, I would be most happy to exchange the fish with anyone that is
interested in them.
Regards, Dan Nielsen
