RE: Where's my eggs!!!

First of all it is Christmas not Easter! Eggs are more likely to be found
then.

OK, Ha Ha

There are many variables affecting egg production. The age of the fish.
Water conditions. Egg eating parents. Etc.

I have BIT which will never lay eggs in a mop and yet I do get occaisional
offspring. Celiae celiae which will only lay eggs if the mop is sunk to the
bottom of the tank. Striatum which will lay eggs for about two weeks and
then stop for two weeks. And I have no idea why my XIP started or stopped
laying eggs.

If you are interested in breeding your AUS. First make sure that your fish
are mature and not too old. I assume that you have one of either sex. Try
moving and changing the color of the mop try either dark green or black. Try
changing the temperature of the water. Look for eggs at different times of
the day. Make sure that the fish have adaquate hiding places to reduce
their stress. Adjust the lighting if all else fails. And last but not least
be patient. You can also try seperating the fish and bringing them together
under controlled circumstances, then pull the mop before the eggs can be
eaten.

In cases where I simply can not get fully mature fish to breed, I set up a
tank with lots of java moss, Riccia and watersprite. Then I let nature take
its course. I started out with 3 BIT one year later, I have at least eight,
despite the fact that they agressively eat their own eggs and fry. This
setup requires absolutely no care except occaisional water changes and
weeding. You need not even add special food for the fry. I have a similar
setup overrun by GAR Misage. Another such setup has produced FIL. This may
not be the best way to get high production rates, but it provides attractive
aquariums with a nice ever expanding colony of fish.

Happy Holidays
