RE: Handling Peat Moss
Hi all,
I also use bail peat but instead of boiling it, I have a 20 litre bucket
that is full of water that I add peat to as I use it this has a 3 inch air
stone powered by a air pump from a protein skimmer the water looks like it's
boiling. Around the top of the bucket you get a ring of really fine peat, in
the water column you get medium grade peat, and stuck on the bottom you get
all your lumpy stuff which I use to condition my water. This also gives you
a constant supply of black water.
With Nematolebias whitei I found the hatch rates were a lot higher with the
medium peat than the fine stuff around the top. I sent 10 packages of eggs
to different people around the world all from the same breeding group 1m 4f
the people who received fine peat had hatches of 100-150 where people who
were sent the medium peat reported hatches 250-300+ no one redried the peat
to rewet it so I don't know if the eggs in the fine peat stayed in dispause
longer. Any ideas?
LLLIUJ your question about breeding Aphyosemions(not being rude you didn't
write your name)besides making sure you have a pair, they are old enough,
you have conditioned them depending on species. For 90% of Aphyosemion you
don't need peat for breeding and those that you do are usually called
Fundulopanchax. My favourite method at the moment is by placing 2 really
thick mops a floating and one just placed on the bottom of the tank I
usually put the floating mop over the bottom mop looks like a big ball of
wall. At the end of the week I pull the mops from the tank and don't even
look for eggs just place them in a glass of water from their tank with an
air stone in the bottom I add water every day and after a week check to see
if their are any eggs visible if so place them back in the glass and check
them again at the end of the week they should be eyed up(you can see a shiny
ring around the black of their eye) then it's time to place them in still
water and see what happens. if they don't hatch in 24 hours you may have to
force hatch them.
