Well Ladies & Gentlemen,
I was beginning to think I was going to have to stand alone
on this issue. and I admit to a Flame.
I have written to several subscribers of the list personally
and asked them to clip their responses. I have written to the full
list many times requesting same. I get back messages about how
important it is to keep the full text of the thread together in their
reply. I insist that most of us don't have the time to go through all
the SPAM to get through to important information. If it isn't
archived on each and everyones' computer, then it is on the AKA
computer where the list originates.
There are 137 subscribers to this list. It has been growing
steadily since inception. Some of us have decades of experience to
add the education of to the new subscriber and new Killie keeper.
But when there is so much >>> and carriage returns it is impossible
to get through to the real information.
I run an E-Commerce business. I get a minimum of 200K of
e-mail everyday. The business almost three times that. I don't have
time to scroll through all the >>>'s and repeated lines of recent
messages. If this list and its subscribers want my advice there are a
few items of etiquette which need to be followed. Personally I think
it shows laziness and lack of respect to others, especially those of
us who have 100 to 250 K of incoming e-mail a day.
Those of us who use the Digest have little or no option but
to look through the ">>>'s" and try to follow the lines to find the
important things in the daily posts. I talked to Barry at the
beginning of this list years ago and discussed the need for an
introduction to newcomers to spell out a few rules of web etiquette
like snipping the past posts, and excluding the HTML formatted text
but he didn't think restrictions were needed back then. Well it has
gone far enough to need something. Of the 137 subscribers to this
list many of them like myself just don't have time to try to get
through the fodder to see if we can help the new keeper or someone
who could benefit from decades of our personal experience.
HTML formatted text is just as bad. It repeats the messages
with HTML commands which no one understands. Once in a while someone
tries to send a JPEG of GIF through the server. What a mess that is.
If there is a message on that server dump I will never see it. DELETE
So I think we need an Intro file to give guidance to
subscribers. There needs to be some rules of the road.
Not a soap box, I want to get to work.
Charles Harrison,
Back to change some more water.
