For really fine peat that contains little debris to clog siphon
hoses, many of us use Jiffy 7 peat pellets. Ruth Warner (who is here on the
Killietalk list, and in the AKA Fish and Egg Listing, both mail and website)
sells them quite reasonably. They can also be bought at garden centers, but
only in spring and summer for some stores. Large quantities can be found
on-line at some sites. Many also use regular peat that comes in the bales
at the garden center. It is certainly cheap enough, but contains many
twigs. Some sift this through wire mesh to get rid of the debris. There
are a number of breeders on the list who use alternative products too.
Personally, I use the Jiffy pellets in my breeding tanks, and the course
stuff in my worm cultures.
