long - time hobbyists

I too, like Shane began with a ten gallon tank ( slate bottom, needed
resealing about every 2 years). It had green crushed glass gravel and a air
driven filter which hung on the back of the tank. Soon I had a few more
10's and then a couple of 29's. I had most of the livebearers, losing
interest after they would breed moving on to whatever I fancied next. I had
a successful run with Bettas and had some Egyptian mouth breeders. By the
time I was 12 I was out of control, after all I now had paper route money,
close to $15 a week. Back in 1964 that was serious money and I lusted after
the first Killies I saw in a place called ED's Aquarium in Farmingdale,
Long Island. I believe they were gardneri and marveled at them although I
never purchased them. I remember being very upset with the managers when
they would not hire me when I turned 16 because I was too young. I quickley
grabbed a fish book off the shelf and asked them to turn to any fish and I
would tell them what PH, temp, place of origin, food preference, etc was
needed for that fish. I believe the book was in binder form and was
published by TFH with a new page available from the monthly publication. I
remember the guy saying, look kid just come back when you are 18.
Undaunted, I still shopped there and kept fish for another 10 years before
taking interests in other things. Not until about 4 years ago did I start
back in with a 10 gallon tank and now have 6 tanks of varing sizes, 2g
-55g, and mostly killies and Discus. My 2 children do the feeding while I
am out of town and we plan on setting up a few more tanks as space allows.
