Re:Species Maintenance (was mixing locations)
KI>I think Bill V. is right to "stir the pot", this is the most interesting
KI>thread in a while, and the one that gets to the heart of the AKA.
Most definitely. One of the basic tenets of the AKA that gets drummed
into newbies heads (along with the code of ethics) is: "thou shalt not
mix locations."
In the best of worlds, if we make proper use of our maintenance
KI>committees, a breeder working with a particular species can, from
KI>researching the archives of these committees, find other breeders who might
KI>have a more recent arrival from the same location to prevent excess
KI>inbreeding in his stock.
This comes back to communications among breeders and having access to
information. I think that we will find the Internet and killietalk
useful for this, as well as the JAKA CD-ROM project. I would have no
idea if two different collection codes were the same location without
access to more knowledgeable people on this list or JAKA or both....
KI>I tend to try to keep populations of the old Roloffia group, and based on
KI>where these guys come from, Sierra Leone in
KI>particular, it is uncertain there will be any collecting in these areas for
KI>quite a while, some of the locations may have even been destroyed. As these
KI>are small groups of fish, it is possible somebody may have the last of a
KI>species location in their tank right now. When it is lost, its probably for
KI>good.
Which is why we MUST, as responsible breeders, take it upon ourselves to
MAINTAIN species rather than simply keeping them. Even if each AKA
member only commits to work with one species, we can still make a pretty
big dent in the ones that are "at risk." Nor does this project need to
take gobs of tanks and space--the WAL GH2 project has 4 breeders right
now, and each of us probably has less than a dozen tanks and other
containers (shoeboxes, ice cream buckets, etc) dedicated to it. In an
ideal world, we would have more, I suppose....Personally, I would far
rather have fewer species and know that I was maintaining them
properly....
Just my 2 cents.
