RE: Snails ... from ["Andre Van Zyl" <vanzylandre at hotmail_com>]

Life bearer and or aquerisol tend to kill off snails. The same manufacturer
also makes a snail killer. Any copper based medication ware also toxic to
snails. You might want to try Giant Japanese Pond Snails. They will
overwinter outdoors, have only one or two offspring at a time and they need
to be larger than an acorn before reproducing. They are easy to pick out.
In breeding tanks, I have not noticed any loss of eggs after adding them.
They are not especially attractive, but they are about as good a it gets
(for snails anyway).

I would like to make a final reference to the fact that they can overwinter
outdoors. If you release a sufficient number of these guys/gals into any
local body of water. Thirty or so years later you will find that they will
become an inexorable part of the ecosystem. For better or worse. Please
dont ask me how I know this.

Well, my two cents worth ...
    Snails and I have a love-hate relationship.
If you have a community tank, snails may simply be unsightly. To control
them, try any of the following: net them out; drop in a piece of leaf
lettuce and a few hours retrieve it (and any snails on it); add a couple of
botias or a couple of gouramis; or try one of the commercially available
snail cures.
If you have snails in your breeding tanks, you may have a real problem,
since most snails will eat fish eggs. Strip the tank and clean thoroughly,
being certain to get off all the little "plaques" of snail eggs. Clean the
plants very carefully before returning them, then watch the tank carefully
for any baby snails that you may have missed, or that hatched out later.
If you have fry tanks, snails are a bonus. A piece of lettuce leaf in
the fry tank (along with a tuft of java moss) and a snail or two will help
keep those little guys fed, since infusoria thrive on snail droppings, and
fish fry eat them eagerly. You can even leave the fry tanks alone for a few
days without feeding, using this method.
A question arises, too, about the type of snails. I personally dislike
and destroy pond snails whenever I find them, like but have to control the
numbers of red ramshorn snails, and like Malaysian Livebearing snails, but
only in my livebearer tanks (they will eat fish eggs faster than any other
snail I've seen).
Hope that my limited input helps you somewhat -
donna
