Subject: re: Fp. gardneri nigerianus
Akamkpa Dark Morph
Hello All,
I now have
photos I can email to anybody on the list who would like to see what these
guys look like. My understanding is that we aren't supposed to post with
attachments, so anybody interested in a look at these unusual fish should send
me an email request. I will then send an email with three photos
attached: a male Dark Morph, two normal male siblings from the same week's
spawn, and one photo of the fish in a group with one Dark Morph and a bunch of
male and female siblings to show how they stand out.
I am not
quite ready to sell any more fish from this strain yet. Maybe
soon. I have set up one Dark Morph male with his mother. They are
producing eggs, but obviously, it will be some months before I can tell if
this is a simple mutation like albinism, or like melanism in bettas. I
have one dark female, but she is as yet too small to breed. I am hoping
this is a fixable strain like australe Reds, but that it is not a lethal gene
like melano bettas where all black females are sterile. Without getting
into genetic technicalities, that would mean always breeding dark males to
normal-looking females carrying the gene and generally getting spawns of 50/50
each phenotype.
I am
interested in fielding comments and suggestions. I was going to ask for
suggestions on what to call these guys, but have decided I like calling them
Dark Morphs. What does the list think?
