Re: Shipping and Caliifornia arrivals

Bill, I had several shipments to CA in the last year. I also have had bad luck. People are reporting ice in there bags upon arrival. Even when it was 50 here and 70 in CA. I also have had replies of bags depressurizing. I am of the opinion that the Post office is flying the styros into CA in a way different than from other locations. bob

Hi;
Bill Shenefelt Here.
I am curious of the experiences of others in shipping fish into California. I have shipped over a hundered boxes of fish from the Pittsburgh, Pa. area in the last 18 months and rarely lose any fish, except those in shipments to California. I have lost a significant number of fish in 6 shipments total this past year, four to California (but that is four aout of four!). This past weekend I shipped to Washington State, Tenn, Colorado, Ohio, and California. (I have had a loss of maybe one fish in a box of 12 to 18 fish but it is rare, maybe 2 or 3 occurrences total and is not counted in the six shimpmets I note as having losses).
Lost 6 of 11 fish in the one to California and none in any of the others. The only 2 shipments I ever made into California as a success were by express mail.
I do not think it is me. I ship on Sat morning immediately after packing, all single fish per bag (3" or 3.5" by 14" bags, bag pair in a 6" outer bag), 2 day fasting prior to bagging, approx 2 to 3 oz of water-pH below 6.6 and 5X that vol of air, double bag, styro box, priority mail. Boxes are tape sealed (styro) and usually styro box is inside a cardboard box, also tape sealed. I do not use heat packs.I avoid shipments when over 78 degrees daytime or below 44 degrees at night in the source and destination area forcasts.
The fish almost always arrive on Monday by early afternoon or even in the AM since the PO does work on Sunday, it is just not open to public patronage most places. I do ship Sat since I can bag right before shipping and not the evening before shipping. Saves a day in the bag.
Any others with similar experience with shipping into California?
