Re: Kordon Bags For Incubation

As in nearly all plastic bags, there will be some
gaseous exchange through the bag. However, the Kordon
bags are particularly permeable for oxygen and carbon
dioxide gases. I suspect that this means that these
bags are really permeable for water vapor. That means
that using Kordon bags may result in much more water
vapor loss and therefore dessication of the peat moss
in which the eggs are incubating. This may result in
the peat drying too much and the eggs in storage stop
development and possibly )Probably) die. Before I
would risk any eggs, I would run a test of peat in my
normal bags and compare the peat stored in a Kordon
bag. At the conclusion of incubation time, I would
compare peat. I think you will find the peat to be
very dry compared to a normal bag.
In no way is this a criticism of Kordon bags because
they are excellent at facilitating gas exchange and
therefore allowing fish and invertebrates to survive
long periods of time in the bag for transport. If you
have access to Kordon bags run the test and report the
results to the list.
