Well, I use carbon in some tanks and don't use it in others.  In the tanks
that I run box filters, the tanks seem to get cloudy water and the gunk
seems to build up faster.  In those tanks with power filters, the water
stays clear longer.  I have some tanks with no filtration with just plants
and fish and they seem to stay clear watered.  The box filters are a mixture
- some with carbon, some with out.

Oh, I am very bad about water changes and worse about cleaning filters.
