Re: KillieTalk Digest V3 #614
<< From: Bill Felton <bafelton at earthlink_net>
OK, I'm moving into a new house and have to confront
water quality issues, so the question at hand is --
what's the range of options?
Details -- water in this area (Plymouth, MN, NW suburb
of Minneapolis) is aproximately 'liquid rock' -- hard
and alkaline.
There is a water softener in the new house.
I know at a high level that the options range from 'use
the water (pre-softener), plus peat filtration' to
'buy the biggest and best RO system you can find'. >>
There is another option: Breed killies that like hard, alkaline water. Some
suggestions include:
Most pupfish (including J. Floridae)
Aphanius mento and related species
Fundulus and some of the brackish killies
Lamprichthys tanganicanus
I believe some Nothos as well
FWIW, I used to live in Fort Worth, Texas, where the water was hard enough to
raise and breed Tanganyikan cichlids with no additives (pH 8.5-9.0) and was
able to breed Epiplatys sexifasciatus in tremendous quantities with no
softening required.
Best wishes;
