Re: Unfiltered Tanks
well I have koi which are extremely dirty. I use Water Hyacinth and NO other
filtration. but I watch the water and at the first sign of anything wrong I
do a water change alternating between at minimum 50% and the next change will
be 100%. right now I have 127 two inch koi already culled a couple of times
in a 125 gallon tank. I just took them today out of their 2000 gallon pond
and brought them into the house about 2 hours ago. Being in the 125 gallon
tank will allow me a good view as I cull them again. and I hope to cull them
again by putting some into the basement this weekend. and another spawning
of probably 250 baby koi 25 days old and growing fast in a 55 gallon. these
are definitely too crowded now. but I am short of time until the weekend.
but this bunch will be moved to a 100 gal and culled by this weekend.
I also have a 500 and 1500 gal ponds in my basement for the koi. I use
regular florescent lights on the water hyacinth and I feed very heavy. this
is NOT necessarily less expensive on the electricity than a filter pump. but
I need all the water hyacinth I can get in the spring for the spawnings.
a biological filter can take 12 weeks to set up. well I will have changed
the water before then so why bother with the biological filter. but I am
working on trying to design one. I only got into this in July and have had 3
spawnings and feel I am doing well. I had them some 6 years ago and
successfully used the water hyacinth for some 2 years without any problems.
