Sherry- how old are your australe?  I've had a pair for about a year now and 
myprevious attempts at breeding were very similar to yours.  About  2 weeks 
ago I got another female to go with a "bachelor" that I've also had for about 
a year.  Just for fun, I threw mops into their tanks (both pairs are each in 
a 2.5-gal tank) and I've picked about 40 eggs over the last few days!!!  The 
eggs are doing fine and don't seem to be fungusing at all.  So.....your pair 
may be a little young, or picky, or bored, etc., BUT DON'T STOP TRYING!!
