Re: Tank racks
I'm getting to this a little later than the others, but I thought
I'd chime in anyway. I also agree with 2x4 and plywood construction. But I
find that mere 1/2 inch plywood is sufficient if the racks are 4' x 2' with
a center beam as well. I like these dimensions because I can do it all with
8' 2x4s and pre-cut 2' x 4' plywood (very easy to transport home). I make
mine 6' tall, with two shelves for tanks and one as a top. I find I have a
lot of peripheral materials like peat, filters, top soil (for worms),
softener salt, shipping boxes, etc. and I use the top shelf and the bottom
floor space for storage. I installed under-counter lights instead of shop
lights over each tank shelf, because shop lights give too much light for my
taste. I also installed a power strip for each shelf for pumps and heaters,
and plug the lights in these too. It is fairly compact, extremely sturdy,
very practical, and leaves plenty of room for maneuvering above the tanks
for cleaning, water changes, etc. I agree with whoever recommended dado
joints for the shelves. I use a dado blade on my table saw, but they are
easily kerfed with a regular circular saw. They only need to be cut on the
uprights. I used screws for all construction because they are stronger than
nails. Each shelf comfortably holds five 5 gallon or 4 10 gallon tanks with
small side out. It also allows space in front of the tanks for
miscellaneous goodies, food, small hatchling containers , etc. The total
cost was about $55.00 including the lights and power strips. All
construction materials were from Home Depot, and all electrical stuff came
from Wal-Mart.
