Re: Culturing Blackworms
They were being commercially raised on Oahu somewhere in Waimanalo (I
think). Basic set up looked like shallow dish pans (enough to cover the
colony) set up on a bench with a constant drip of water (sort of like the
flow through system found at many good pet shops with self draing tanks).
In this case they used dried chicken manure as a food source. These were
tubiflex worms and not black worms as up to recently black worms were a
prohibited species in Hawaii. The pet shops would sell them at $2.00 per
ounce. I figure most things get marked up 200-300% to make a profit so go
figure. Apparently, the grower was making money as he would also sell
wholesale to breeders....
