Re: worms and disease

What are the relative merits of tubifex and blackworms as
food value and disease carriers? I have anecdotal experiences with fish dying
after eating blackworms and others have the same evidence for tubifex killing
fish.>>
I do know that various species of bottom-dwelling worms, including tubifex, are intermediate hosts for what is commonly known as "whirling disease." Trout hatcheries in the western states are having a tremendous problem with this disease. Part of the treatement involves sterilizing raceways with a strong bleach solution and making sure that no worms get into the system. My sources for this are Aquaculture Magazine and Hatchery Magazine. Send me an email just before the next meeting and I'll bring some articles up to Dave Koran's house.
