Field buffs: Fundulus specimens needed!
Please pass this on to other lists, as you think appropriate.
A colleague and former student in my laboratory, David Duvernell, now at
Southern Illinois University, is in need of alcohol-fixed field collections
of any and all Fundulus species for his studies of transposable elements
("jumping genes") in fish genomes. At the moment, interest is highest for
good samples of coastal species, especially F. heteroclitus, F. grandis,
and F. confluentus
from throughout their ranges, but other species are also of serious
interest. Sampling emphasis is on a moderate number of specimens (say 8 -
20) from a number of different locales rather than a large number of
specimens from a single locale.
Specimens should be fixed in the field in alcohol (no formalin). Almost
any sort of alcohol will do, from dilute vodka or rum to absolute ethanol
or methanol. Pharmacy or grocery store alcohol works very well. Use the
bottle it comes in as a convenient container. Alternatively, small plastic
soda bottles, worke well also. After the specimens have been in alcohol
for about a day, remove them, wrap them in cheescloth or paper toweling
soaked in alcohol, and then seal them into a plastic bag (use a bag sealer
or two or three well sealed "ziploc" style bags). Include a label, in
pencil, giving precise collection locality, date, etc. with the specimens.
Please don't try to mail significant volumes of free-standing alcohol!
Most of the time, specimens which may have accidentally dried during
shipment are still quite useful as sources of DNA...
Please mail specimens to:
