I've come to call these virus hoaxes "informational
viruses," since their intent seems to be to trigger a
proliferation of the warning message itself between users,
much like a real virus proliferates within your system.

Refusing to forward them does not, as you suggest, "play
right into the hands of the hoaxers." It nips the "virus"
from spreading any further.

If you receive one you're not sure of, look it up on one of
the virus ID sites. I can't point you to one right now, but
a search engine should supply you with quite a few.
