UPDATE: successful cure of popeye!

Well,

We're into day 6 of the treatment and the improvement is marked. I made
three changes to joe's protocol (see below:
1) I've kept the tank at 6tsp/gal for most of the treatment
2) used a different sulfa drug cocktail. The medicine is a four sulfa drug
mix with trimethiprin used to treat aermonas infections in koi and
gouramis. It's called Sulfa 4+TMP or something like that from
www.fishyfarmacy.com. They specialize in somewhat heavier duty drugs for
fish, with pretty good diagnostic support. This medicine had the advantage
of being something that was 1) on hand and 2) effective against the
aeromonas I suspect as being the root cause (given prior nasty outbreaks
I've had

3) I also dosed with Melafix which is a mild but helpful antibacterial

The swelling of the eye is markedly reduced and the bloody ring around the
eye has vanished. I expect a complete recovery (THANKS, JOE!) from a
disease I've never had any luck with before.

In other bad news, one more of the nothos has died after hovering at the
surface with ragged fins and another has turned into a hard breathing
bellyslider. I think the swim bladders are affected by this disease. This
leaves me with one healthy fish from this batch. I think it time to start
from new eggs rather than finding males for these ones. Maybe in a month
if they're healthy again.

>Try this:
>
>1/8 teaspoon of Potassium Permanganate dissolved into a clean 2.5 gal. tank
>filled with fresh water. Net out the fish and dip fish in the net for 3
>minutes (use a watch). Return fish to a clean 2.5 gallon tank and treat
>with TriSulfa from Mardel at 2 times the suggested dosage (1/2 tab per 2.5
>gal) and 1tsp salt per gallon. Use airstone to provide the best oxygen
>level in the tank due to increased medication load. I do not use a filter
>of any kind during this treatment. Treat for 5 days and do complete water
>change on 3rd day. After 5th day of treatment return fish to clean tank
>with regular filtration. During the treatment for 5 days, I feed mostly
>daphnia and a small amount of BBS as I believe that the daphnia absorb some
>of the TriSulfa before being eaten. If you don't have Potassium
>Permanganate hanging around, you can buy a small bottle at Sears in the
>water treatment section. This treatment works well for me.
