Re: whats the best peat to use
I agree with Tom, that Jiffy pellets are the easy way to go, unless you need
a *whole* lot. Then use Canada Sphagnum peat bales from the garden shop.
Fibrous peat is out of the question in the US because of price. Substitutes
are being worked on, but probably not available in all parts of the country.
For clubs, the pellets are available in bulk through the major seed
catalogs.
I think Tom meant *without* fertilizer. Ammonium nitrate can raise hell with
any tank. On that topic, I've never found Jiffy pellets with any ingredient
but peat in them. YMMV. Of course, I'm cheap and only buy them at K-Mart.
;-) Read the label.
BTW, Lee's "Jiffy 703" designation is, I think, a thing of the past. We
haven't seen it for years out here on the Left Coast (retail). Most have no
numerical identifier, now. Contents *are* on the label, tho.
Boiling and rinsing removes any simple solubles, but the important reason is
to drive the air out of the fibers and replace with water, so it doesn't
take two weeks to sink. Use a brine-shrimp net to rinse for those smaller
Fp. species that prefer a very fine substrate for spawning. Since the Jiffy
pellets wet much easier than the baled peat, I suspect some trace of salt or
other wetting agent (triethanolamine?) is used. Good rinsing, as a minimum,
is probably still a good idea, even if your SO refuses microwave privileges
for fish stuff.

PS. I didn't learn how to stop getting burned fingers until I started
removing the little plastic mesh *before* boiling. :-)

Rule 1: Don't tell people everything you know.
