RE: Daphnia food wasRe: Moving to Blenders

I use Brewers Yeast exclusively to feed the daphnia - read the label and you
will know why. I raise mine outdoors in the summer so algae production is
never an issue. I buy my brewers yeast at nutritional stores in 1 lb. cans
or glass. Most brands of yeast are the same stuff under different labels.
At grocery stores, in the vitamin section, you can also usually find Brewers
Yeast tablets that can be ground up in a blender also, but I think the
canned stuff is the way to go. I do not use bakers yeast. I blend about 4
heaping tablespoons in 4 cups of water in the blender on high for about 5, 2
minute periods. I think the appliance lasts longer with the 2 minute
intervals. I then pour the 4 cups of liquid into a 2 liter pop bottle and
fill it up with straight water. The bottle needs to be refrigerated but
your nose and eyes will tell you that if you should happen to leave it out.
What makes the difference? The particle size of the daphnia food. When the
liquid food hits the surface of the water it has to disperse as if it were a
cloud spreading out. The ultra fine particles then have a chance to stay
suspended longer and therefore eaten by the daphnia. As with brine shrimp,
less is better. I use a 3 ml plastic lab droppers to lace the surface of
the daphnia containers and use about 1/2 the liquid I would normally use if
I used a baster. I always seem to overfeed if I use a baster. Overfeeding
of daphnia means a sure crash for your culture. This is just one method for
culturing daphnia, it has been successful for me, but in the end it's an art
and not a science.
