Killie Names

Hi all!

I was looking at a killie listing recently and cringing at a couple of the
spelling mistakes. That person was almost as bad a speller as I am.
And that doesn't begin to account for typos.

I don't want to cut into sales of KMI, Wildekamp's books, et al, but would
it be possible to publish a list of killies (including locations, codes) on
the AKA home site? The idea is that anyone could download it as a text file.
I would be quick to send an e-mail reply to myself with that list included.
Hopefully the spell check and add commands that followed would load the
correct spelling into the spell checker. I would do the same thing with my
regular word processing program on the computer. And it is easier than
scanning everything in from one or several of the books.

It would render as significant a service to the killie community as that
overview of Ken Lazara's in the back of a recent JAKA. Maybe fewer people
curious about killies would be as intimidated by names.

I believe it was George Slusarczuk, who when he took over as JAKA editor,
made it an early priority to have the person typing the JAKAs first type in
the entire name list from KMI III. It was one of several things which helped
that publication quickly look sharper and read at a more authoritative
level.

There have been a number of complaints on this list about many mistakes
people make with their killie names. I think this would help improve how we
(and the general aquarium hobby) present our killies. Also, just as after
repeated corrections from a spell checker finally convince/condition us to
spell a word correctly, maybe we (and I) would do a little better job with
the killie names. And less confusion would bedevil readers and those
unfamiliar with a particular killie.

Thanks and all the best,

Scott
