RE: [Cruelty laws?]
Animals should be treated well in direct proportion to their ability to
suffer. An animal without conscious awareness (like a chicken) doesn't have
any idea whatis going on in a slaughterhouse. A pig on the other hand which
almost certainly is capable of understanding what is going on should not be
subjected to the conditions of the slaughterhouse. When I lived out in the
country, I raised my own pig each year, treated him well and when the time
came I killed him quickly when he wasn't looking. I don'think animals have
rights, but abusing them damages us.

Well,an interesting take on a very large debate. He does go off on a few
major tangents that aren't particularly pertinent or fruitful, but it is
interesting. However, I think it is very interesting that he draws such a
sharp distinction between humans as rational and other animals as not being
rational. It seems reasonable that rights regulate the interaction between
an individual and others, but not clear why non-human animals aren't/can't
be included in "others." But then I'm not a big fan of Ayn Rand's.
Rationality is vastly overrated in my book. But we could go off on this
for days, I think!
