Re: CKA, other affiliate meetings

Oops,

We sure thought that the info was mailed in to the AKA for the roster a long
time ago. (The place listed for Chicago, we last met in back in '95 or '96,
it doesn't even exist anymore.) Well, all of us are human. In every other
way I can think of the last three membership chairs have been terrifically
helpful over the years. We seem allergic to rosters.

At any rate, the CKA meets at the Elmhurst Holiday Inn on York Road. Meeting
time is 8 PM, often until 10 or 11. For most of us we will be getting off of
the Eisenhower extension (I 290) at York Road and going north - it is right
there. Local people in the western suburbs may wish to take Irving Park West
from George M's area (skirting the south side of O'Hare Field) and head
south on York Road. Or go north from North Avenue.

The Chicago group meets the second Friday of the odd numbered months. It is
a little weird, but works for a group which has drawn attendees from as many
as five states. (The greatest distances are still usually driven by
downstate Illini.) Because so many off us travel what seems like a long
distance to meet with fellow killinuts (at least we though we drove a ways
until we talk to Tom Kean, Brian Watters, Southern Californians or those
from Upstate New York), we often treat the occasion as quite a special
event. A group often goes out for coffee and breakfast afterwards - both for
the additional killie talk and for necessary caffeine and food for the drive
home.

July meetings tend to be a little light on auction items, compared to the
other meetings, That can make the 50-50 auction a good seller's meeting.
Bring a styro anyway. There will still probably be several dozen bags of
killies, plants and containers of food cultures.

If any of you out of towners reading this list happen to be in the area,
please nudge your plans to include a CKA event if you can. We would be
delighted to have you join us for the evening.

Thinking of Doug's quest to find the details on the Exclusively Killies
meeting, especially in summer and around holidays, some affiliate stalwarts
are not on-line. Far more easily updated that the rosters are the affiliate
club listings on the AKA home page. Discrepancies still exist sometimes
between the description on the AKA page and the specific club home pages, so
check out both. Contact people, e-mails and phone numbers are always given
too. Many times future programs, importations of killies, resource people
and special events are listed.

As Bill posted, we are privileged to hear from our old friend Jim Gasior.
The Gasiors have e-mailed his 20 page handout used at the National. We will
be running that off for the meeting. Jim has addressed the CKA a lot over
their last 42 years - and he's only 31! I am continually amazed by how he
can deliver new, insightful and fresh material so many times over the years.
Excepting maybe George Maier and Jim Thomerson, I have learned more from Jim
than anyone else in the craft.

The same would be declared by all the other affiliates, but any of you are
welcome to drop in for a meeting.

All the best!

Scott
