I also prefer not o cover the tanks because it makes access for feeding and
maintenance more difficult and reduces the available light for plants. I have
had a few losses, but only when the water level is within about 3 inches of
the top. A few exceptions to this rule. Rare and expensive Rivulus will jump
at least 5-6 inches through a tiny hole. Cheap and common Rivulus probably do
also but they reproduce faster than they jump. Most other killies, especially
annuals are not as prone to jump out. I have Epiplatys dageti in a 5 gallon
tank with about 2 inches gap and no problem. Floating plants like water
sprite, Salvinia and Duckweed inhibit jumping and also when first moved to a
tank they are more prone to jump out or if the water quality drops they want
to move to different environment. Keep them covered for the first week or so
and then if they seem settled they should be OK at 3 inches, unless they are
a Rivulus.
