Re: Mosquitos and other invasives
An old thread but my recent observations thrown into the net...
For Mosquito's I have found that in my 15 or so tubs for live foods the very
best is a small tank filled with cattle manure which fills naturally with
rain water (we get a lot of this in the UK). When it gets to about 10-20 cm
I pour it into my main Daphnia pool. Now the Mosquito's are starting to lay
I found they greatly prefer this tub over anything else. Not the best thing
to net live food out of so I use a small stick & place the egg rafts into
cleaner tubs to hatch out. Works for me.
On the subject of eggs from the UK. I have sent many containers to the USA &
other countries in the containers previously mentioned. I don't wait till
they eye up however as this is too late to send them. After 3 days from
picking they should not fungus. Fungus attacks infertile eggs. I have
hatched eggs coated in fungus from neighbouring eggs.
I have sent eggs in water with a small amount of moss from the lawn which
does help to keep the water sweet in transit.
A.schluppi. I kept in the mid '80's but I think this is not in the UK at
this time.
New to me, I picked up Aplocheilus panchax Exame from Indonesia. A colourful
form with the black & white outer margins in the caudal going right round
the end of the fin forming a semi circle.
Fp.mirabilis intermittens Etuku. The caudal is almost solid yellow. The eggs
are small but I am getting fertile eggs now.
Both fish should be on pictured in the BKA website shortly...
