Keeping Records

I started out with the basic aquarium strains of killies and as such have
been keeping very basic records. Now I have grown into more species, some
with collection codes. I know that the record keeping needs to be greatly
improved if I am going to keep it all straight. What does everyone use? And
I guess more importantly, how do you set it all up and what do you keep
track of?
Or - if the world had the perfect tracking system - be it paper, notecards,
or computer, what would it have on it? I want to do this right. I think it
would be great if when I sell/trade/give fish to someone else that I could
also give them the breeding lineage even if it just has who I got the fish
from and what I have done with them. Then I could let people know if my fish
are related to their fish or not. Many times we go looking for 'fresh blood'
to breed with our fish, never knowing if we are in reality getting the same
tankmates from someone else.
