RE: KillieTalk Digest V3 #345
WV,
I recently purchased Marsilea quadrifolia from a shop as well as Home Depot,
both from their aquatic gardening areas. I am still trying to transfer the
plants from "holding tubs" to the 100 gallon stock tanks I use for outdoor
rearing and breeding (to hopefully be completed this weekend). I did set up
one tank with a pot of Marsilea last weekend that also houses some Fund.
lineolatus. During the holding process, this large pot of Marsilea also
developed a good growth of hair algae. I also have placed a well developed
water lettuce plant in the tank and thus far I have noticed the Fundulus
seem to prefer the Marsilea over the cover and multiple, hairy, trailing
roots of the water lettuce. Water gardening books warn that Marsilea will
tend to become invasive but if you are really looking for cover in your tank
this is not a bad idea. One thing to note is that the plants do tend to
also grow 3-4 inches above the water as well and I expect that in an indoor
aquarium with an overhead tank hood might block out much of the light to the
rest of the tank. There is also another Marsilea I picked up which has
finer leaves which seems to function just as well.

Subject: Marsilea Quadrifolia - Water Shamrock
My son and I are heading to Boy Scout summer camp in a few weeks, so I
picked up a few Peterson Field Guides to bone up on plant and animal
identification. I'm browsing through _Ferns_, by Boughton Cobb, and
stumbled on a Water Fern, Marsilea Quadrifolia or Water Shamrock, that seems
to be a suitable specimen for a planted killie tank as it sends it's stem to
the surface and the shamrock shaped leaves open at the surface. Hence, it
would help reduce a kellies need to jump. Or it could be a suitable sunning
platform for Rivulus <G>.
Anyone have any experience with this plant.
