Re: Daphnia
We have them in Hawaii. They were brought in as a biological control agent
for the other mosquitos. Apparently they are predatory as immatures (eat
other aquatic insects, daphnia, tadpoles, etc). Makes rearing difficult
one immature per tank (like N. ocellatus). The adults are nectar feeders.
They are huge (dime sized) and brilliant blue. Genus Toxirehchites (sp?).
Trivia note, in the movie Jurassic Park, the mosquito that they showed in
amber that the dino DNA was extracted from was one of these mosquitos and
it was a male. So the entomology people said 1: how did a male mosquito
bite a dinosaur and 2: being that this genus are exclusively nectar
feeders.....
