Hi Doug,
     My female xiphidius stay hidden with their tails in the floating plants, face down.  The males hide in the peat at the bottom.  When they get to be sexually mature, the males will take an open water position near the mop.  The females, when ripe with eggs, will swim around midwater.  If your fish are not at least six months old, they are probably hiding.  If they are mature, try some floating plants and a little peat on the bottom and see if that helps.  Good luck...bob
