Re: Plants

I personally wouldn't use lava rock, especially if you've got killies that
like to hide. Much like eels, coolie loaches, and other bottom dwellers,
I'd think that shy killies that like to hide amongst the foliage would be
severely apt to scrape themselves against the stuff. Go for the wood--it's
prettier, and, like someone else brought up, it adds tannins to the water,
which is, of course, good if you're keeping killies that prefer acidic, soft
conditions. Another alternative is this stuff called Rainbow Rock which is,
if I recall correctly, a type of slate. I don't think it affects water
parameters, but I have seen folks attach anubias, java fern, java moss and
even bolbitis to the stuff w/ fishing line. Finally, if you take a look at
the June 2000 issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist, you'll find and article
regarding the usage of cork tiles to plant various epiphytic species. It
might be worth a look and I myself am thinking of giving it a go. Hope this
helps.
