silly newb question: painting tanks

Long ago when I tried to paint the backs of some tanks black, I wasn't =
very successful, the paint was very prone to flaking off in big chunks.

Now that I'm getting back into the hobby, I'm getting the impression that, =
for many killies, "dark is better," and for some others, "way dark is way =
better."

So how do y'all experienced killie-keepers "treat" your tanks to keep the =
little light-sensitive critters happy? Is there a special kind of paint my =
local home improvement warehousers didn't think to tell me about? Some =
kind of "glass etching" process that makes the paint adhere better? Use a =
dark primer in lieu of (finish) paint? Just use std. aquarium backgrounds =
from the LFS?=20

You get the idea. Inquiring minds want to know.=20
