Re: Rose by any other name is wrong.
Gee ... I've actually spent more time this week writing to the list than I
normally do in 6 months <grins>
I agree wholeheartedly with Tyrone about the problems of the post office -
the only protection the AKA could take would end up more costly to the
membership - putting a heavier cover on the BNL or enclosing it in an
envelop, both of which add to the weight and the cost of postage. Its
unlikely the PO will change since it is people rushing through millions of
pieces of mail every day.
As for nomenclature ...
Two publications will be coming out shortly - Ken Lazara's incredible Killie
Master Index and the Species Maintenance Report, both of which should be
accurate in terms of names and populations. Species Maintenance Committee
is waiting to release the SMC Report until it can be compared to the KMI for
accuracy. I can tell you the SMC Report is already formatted in a way that
will make it very easy for Barry to place it on the AKA website in its
entirety if he desires.
My plans are to have the SMC Report completed a week after the 2000
Convention in Tampa and in the hands of Lee Harper and Dick Martino for
publication as soon as they can do it. I will send it to Barry the same day
and let the board/Barry decide how and when to place it on the web. It is
my intention to send regular updates to the web site for Barry to modify/ or
give me access for modification and that document can be used as the basis
for future paper volumes.
Its my great hope these two documents (KMI and SMC Report) will go a long
way in assisting us all with proper spelling and location data on all the
fish in (and out of) the hobby.
The Species Maintenance Report will be formatted in this manner (may not
accurately reflect the species used in the example):
Species populations Other
identifications Status in hobby
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
Riv. xiphidius (No population identified indicates Aquarium
Strain) (unknown = no info available)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
Riv. xiphidius PK-15
uncommon
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
Riv. xiphidius Creek Boulanger Crique
Boulanguer In the hobby ( = secure)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
