Re: Fundulus cingulatus

Lee, your question about Fundulus rubrifrons being a possible synonym of F.
cingulatus/F. auroguttatus threw me for a short tizzy. Off the top of my
head I admit I had forgotten exactly what were the machinations and
reclassifications leading to the present (tenuous) status quo. Here's a
quote I found from Rick Mayden, from notes to the Texas Natural History
Collection list:

"Fundulus auroguttatus (Hay) and Fundulus rubrifrons (Jordan) were
previously recognized as junior synonyms of Fundulus cingulatus
Valenciennes. The holotype of Fundulus cingulatus has been determined to be
a specimen of F. lineolatus; the former becomes a junior synonym of the
latter (Gilbert et al., 1992)."

This served to raise both F. auroguttatus (former cingulatus) and F.
rubrifrons (a separate species now, formerly separate subspecies in some
eyes) to full species status and remove cingulatus as a legitimate Fundulus
specific name. (If you like this kind of argument you should become either a
full-time lawyer or a systematist...)

For a full data overload, here's what is probably the best list of the
recognized species of Fundulus, also taken from the Texas Natural History
Collection site:

Fundulus albolineatus - whiteline topminnow
Fundulus auroguttatus - banded topminnow
Fundulus bifax - stippled studfish
Fundulus blairae - westem starhead topminnow
Fundulus catenatus - northem studfish
Fundulus chrysotus - golden topminnow
Fundulus confluentus - marsh killifish
Fundulus diaphanus - banded killifish
Fundulus dispar - northern starhead topminnow
Fundulus escambiae - eastern starhead topminnow
Fundulus euryzonus - broadstripe topminnow
Fundulus grandis - gulf killifish
Fundulus heteroclitus - mummichog
Fundulus jenkinsi - saltmarsh topminnow
Fundulus julisia - barrens topminnow
Fundulus lima - Baja killifish
Fundulus lineolatus - lined topminnow
Fundulus luciae - spotfin killifish
Fundulus majalis - striped killifish
Fundulus notatus - blackstripe topminnow
Fundulus notti - southern starhead topminnow
Fundulus olivaceus - blackspotted topminnow
Fundulus parvipinnis - California killifish
Fundulus pulvereus - bayou killifish
Fundulus rathbuni - speckled killifish
Fundulus rubrifons - redface topminnow
Furdulus sciadicus - plains topminnow
Fundulus seminolis - Seminole killifish
Fundulus similis - longnose killifish
Fundulus stellifer - southern studfish
Fundulus waccamensis - Waccamaw killifish
Fundulus zebrinus - plains killifish
Fundulus zebrinus zebrinus - plains killifish

So there are currently 32 recognized species of Fundulus (including F.
zebrinus zebrinus as maybe a species waiting to be recognized). And the
Pacific coast species I forgot this morning is F. lima.

This will all change, of course.
