ahem, did you say Eheim? Also the age thing
I was in Kowloon and Hong Kong last year in May. The same day our ship
arrived (USS Belleau Wood) was the day we bombed the Chinese Embassy
in Yugoslavia. Wasn't a pleasant visit but I remember the shops in both
places having very cheap prices and the reasons why already discussed by
others. I saw fish that I wanted to buy: chocolate gouramis the size of
which I will never see again, rainbows, big breeder size tiger barbs, etc.
All quite cheap when you factor HK$ to our own (nowhere as cheap as Bali but
that's another story). I could imagine myself sloshing up on the brow of the
ship with a fishbowl in each arm saying: they followed me home can I keep
them?--just wouldn't work. So it's always "look don't buy" when "shopping"
for live plants and fish in asian ports. My wife's relatives raise aquatic
plants on their farms for hobbyists in northern Thailand (Kheung Nai
province by Laos)--but having them send plants to their son-in-law is
impossible. Similar to trying to get live plants from Tropica of Denmark. I
had a great time visiting the plant farms in Singapore in
May '98. Just don't chew gum in town or harass their females like some
of the sailors found out much to their woe.
Since I'm fastly approaching 50 the end of this month, I find the age
demographics topic a little depressing, but that's just me.
Let's give each other (beauregardless of age) a great big cyber hug.
Thank you,
Bill
