Re: Age in the killie hobby
I believe that all go's in cycles, most of us 40+ killie hobbyist started out
like I did as the 25 year olds that moved on from the general fish clubs. As
my interest turned to killies ,I started attending Chicago Killifish Assoc.
meetings. Within a year or two I attended my first conv. and I hav'nt missed
very many since then. This included years where I got married and had two
kids. Travel to a lot of local shows slowed down a bit and now as my two boys
are older we travel a bit more[Tho not as often as I'd like] The CKA
membership when I joined included such outstanding killiefish breeders as
George Maier,Bob Bostrand,Gerhard Kallus ,Bob Skirm ,and Jerry Blazejak. The
next group of new kids included Scott Davis and Jerry Lindquist, accomplished
breeders at thier local clubs. I became the new kid on the block and I hope
someday that my boys continue thier interest in killies. We find many of our
new members coming from the general club ranks and from people who attend the
local shows. I think that this trend will continue as many times we see
members gone for many years returning to get some killies at the annual show.
You are right tho when you say that we have more time as we get older, but it
may just be that its more important now cause we are still doing it 20 some
years laterand anything we can do to encourage our younger members is reward
in its self . Something to keep in mind when that beginner asks you a
question. This something that a lot of other hobbys forget and thats why the
AKA is still going and strong. The next group of new kids is at your next
show or auction or maybe at the national conv.,keep an eye out for them they
need your help.......................Kurt
