Re: common names for killies? Bad idea

Agreed, but this is an argument also for *standardized* common names. We
are all quite happy using scientific names amongst ourselves, but only
folks who are willing to do this will get into killies. For the average
fishkeeper out there (and the average fishstore owner) will not try to sell
them or sell them under some made up name which will completely confuse
everyone. This wouldn't be fixed by using existing local names, but rather
defining a set of AKA establish common names that all killifolks use in
selling fish to a wider population.
I certainly wouldn't advocate using common names amongst a population of
fishkeeper who are already proficient with the scientific names, but having
a standard set would be a step up from having each species have a zillion
common names and "golden killie" refer to nine different species. It'd be
quite a bit of work to do, and probably not worth it, although someone
sugggested it's actually already been done, although no one seems to use
those standard names much.
